“Mente chiusa e mente aperta.
[“Closed mind and open mind. One sets boundaries, the other sees horizons. One shuts down, the other lights up. One criticizes, the other experiments. One says no, the other says ‘why not?'” This quote by Fabrizio Caramagna beautifully sums up one of the things that top-level athletes often have in common: mindset. It’s a trait that goes beyond just winning or performing and embraces a whole range of intangible situations and emotions that every amateur athlete should consider adopting if they truly want to improve.]

[In the global mountain biking scene, Karl Platt—who turned 46 last March 14—is one of those athletes you can rightfully call a “GOAT.” Not just for his victories, but (perhaps more importantly) for his methodical yet relaxed approach to sport and training. It’s a mindset that helped him win the Transalp 7 times and the Cape Epic 5 times. Today, the legendary German mountain biker is one of the most iconic figures of the FSA Bike Festival in Riva del Garda, the premier MTB event that has been drawing bikers from all over Europe for more than 30 years to celebrate the start of the fat-tire season. This year’s edition took place from May 1–4, hosting 350 brands and welcoming over 80,000 visitors. Though no longer racing as a pro, Karl Platt continues to compete in his favorite sport—and most importantly, to have fun every time he gets on the bike, as he shared with us in this short interview filled with memories, technical tips, and a few reflections.]

[Your sporting journey and technical skills have made you one of the strongest mountain bikers in the world. Is there a special memory from your early days on fat tires that you’re particularly attached to?]
[It’s been such a long time that I don’t have one specific memory. I’ve always been very strong on technical sections, and that helped me achieve some success. As a kid, I was really brave and didn’t want to be left behind by the older guys during downhill runs—even though, of course, sometimes I ended up on the ground (laughs).]
[Your first long-distance win dates back to 2001 at the Lake Garda Marathon. That same year you also placed third in the Transalp Challenge—which you later went on to win seven times. Was there a specific moment when you realized that marathon racing was your natural environment?]
[The 2001 win in Riva del Garda was really a special moment! No one expected it, and for me, it was a dream come true to win there. From that point on, it became clear that I had what it took to achieve more, but I still wanted to focus on the XC World Cup. The shift to marathon racing only came a few years later, when I started competing in both disciplines.]

[From Cross Country to Marathon—what’s the difference in terms of mental effort?]
[In the past, it was possible to combine both disciplines well, but today they’re completely different. Cross Country has become very specialized—super explosive and very technical. Courses now include huge jumps and rock gardens. Marathon, on the other hand, with its natural trails and long distances, is for everyone! It also requires a different kind of training approach.]
[What’s your connection with the Garda Trentino area and the Bike Festival?]
[Back in 1995, during the early days of mountain biking, I used to visit Lake Garda with friends. Even then, you could go on some amazing rides—and today, the area’s reputation has grown so much that every mountain biker knows the trails here. And then there’s the Bike Festival, which marks the start of summer for bikers: the sun is shining, you’re riding your bike, eating pizza, and having cappuccino for breakfast! Everyone is in a great mood and happy that winter is finally over.]

[Winning one Cape Epic makes you a legend. Winning five makes you a part of history. How does it feel to be one of only two athletes in the world to have won this incredible South African stage race five times?]
[You only really understand what you’ve achieved at the end of the day, when fans look at you with admiration. We all love riding our bikes—and that’s what really matters. Whether you finish first or last.]
[You know well that in off-road triathlon, the MTB leg plays a crucial role—it can decide the outcome of the race. What advice would you give Triathlete Italia readers to train like a true Pro biker?]
[A mountain biker comes from mountain biking! You just need to spend a lot of time on the trails until it becomes part of your DNA. If you only train on the road, you can’t expect to be fast on the trails.]

[Five tips to improve your downhill riding technique]
(KP) 1. Uscire spesso in mountain bike e allenarsi;
2. Definire un percorso di allenamento e percorrerlo ripetutamente per creare una routine; io lo chiamo “sviluppare una memoria fotografica” in modo che la mente non debba pensare troppo mentre si pedala;
3. Considerare l’eventualità di prendere un allenatore e pedalare insieme a lui su percorsi diversi, semplicemente per imparare ad aumentare la velocità guidando dietro di lui;
4. Non mettersi mai troppo sotto pressione; se vedi che non stai progredendo, torna alle basi e ricomincia;
5. La cosa più importante: divertirsi!
[1. Ride your mountain bike often and train regularly;
2. Choose a specific training trail and ride it repeatedly to build a routine. I call this “developing a photographic memory” so your mind doesn’t have to think too much while riding;
3. Consider getting a coach and riding behind them on different trails—just to learn how to increase your speed by following their line;
4. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If you feel stuck, go back to the basics and start over;
5. Most importantly: have fun!]
[Three things a biker should never underestimate—neither in training nor in racing]
(KP) 1. Avere una visione d’insieme e non mettersi i paraocchi;
2. Attrezzatura adeguata (sembra scontato ma non lo è);
3. Alimentazione.
[1. Keep a broad perspective and avoid tunnel vision;
2. Use proper equipment (it may seem obvious, but it’s not);
3. Nutrition.]
[Throughout your career, you’ve won a lot—but also lost. How do you mentally deal with a defeat when you’ve done everything right, expectations are high, and yet it doesn’t go your way?]
[People only ever see someone’s success—but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. To succeed, you have to go through deep valleys and always learn why you were there in the first place. You have to stay positive, even when it seems almost impossible. Our minds and thoughts often play tricks on us, so it’s important to filter them. Every failure is an opportunity to learn. Sometimes though, it’s just bad luck! So laugh it off and move on!]

[Even though you’re no longer racing at the same level, mountain biking is still part of who you are—just like training. Have you ever felt like you didn’t want to ride? And if so, how did you deal with it?]
[That happens to me all the time (laughs)—and it’s totally normal. You can’t eat the same thing every day. If I’m not in the mood to ride, I do something else. I know the motivation will come back—give it two days and I’ll be back in the saddle. So give yourself a break now and then—you’ll want it again soon enough!]
[Last question (and a crucial one for off-road triathletes): beer only after the race, or also after training?]
(KP) Faccio come mi va! Non ci sono regole! Quindi sì, anche dopo l’allenamento…
[I do what I feel like! There are no rules. So yes—also after training!]
